So if you're into tournaments and have never heard of this tournament or just have never been...you should check out the London Wiffleball Tournament. It's one of the longest running wiffleball tournaments in the country. The geography of this tournament is refreshing too, seeing as to how it's in London, Ohio. Far too often are the big tournaments held near the west coast or in the New England area. So having a tournament in the Midwest is pretty rad...share the love. Fun fact: it's the largest slow-pitch wiffleball tournament in the world. Brian Wheeler is the guy who runs the tournament and he does a great job. It's a pretty elaborate set up. He sets up 16 wiffleball fields at the Bogenfire Farm in London, Ohio. So...it's no small tournament. Over 60 teams competed last year (mostly from the Columbus/Chillicothe area) in the one-day tournament. This summer the tournament will be held on July 16, 2011. It's $100 bucks per team to register and each team can have 6 players on the roster.
If you've never competed in a tournament this would be a great tournament to start out with. Register on their website and if you have any questions then contact Brian Wheeler (bwheele@columbus.rr.com)
This is the tournament that Carl, our founder/commissioner, first played in and caught the wiffleball bug. We still use a few rules/ideas from London's book, namely our pitcher's circle, and some slightly modified from them to work better with the fast-pitch game.
ReplyDeleteIt is a fun tournament and we've gone 4 times, I think. Won't make it this year, though; it's smack in the middle of our playoffs.
I've never been to the tournament but the guy who runs it obviously puts a lot of hard work into it. My league was invited several years in a row but we could never get a team out there. I may go there this summer to film and write a little bit. It just depends on how the summer goes.
ReplyDeleteThanks for kind words about our London Wiffleball Toourney. Carl, good luck on your season in Michigan as I check your website frequently to see how things are going on. If you and your friends can make it this year that would be great but I know its hard to schedule around Playoff wiffleball.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I would really like to have Wiffler's Digest to come down to London this summer. You and your friends will have a blast. Hope to see you. Talk to you soon,
Brian Wheeler

Brian - It is quite possible that I may come out there to film, photograph and interview there. I'll keep you posted on that. It really depends on how ridiculous gas prices get between now and July.
